Hello there!
I wanted to share pictures of my last outing on insta but this new update makes the feed look shitty doesnt it?
It made me think about how i havent blogged in a long while.. I tried, i have the unfinished posts to prove it, but the heart wasnt in it i guess, so i never published them..
Anyways, about yesterday.. well lately i've been down, and i was really looking forward to seeing my friends.
Unfortunately Floria didnt come :( I was a little late but thankfully, i only missed ads, and i saw the movie from beggining to end.
That was only yesterday, but i keep thinking about this movie. It's hard to formulate an opinion on it. First things first, I feel glad that i saw it. It was certainly entertaining, I dont regret seeing it.
I don't watch a lot of horror movies, in fact that was the first big girl horror film I watched in theater; im not counting the FNAF movie lol. But this one wasn't that scary either. It wasn't bad though. I'm really enjoying finally reading everyone's analyses online, now that I dont have to avoid spoilers.
btw, Spoiler alert for Nosferatu! Since i want to talk about it.
Anyways, i really came into the movie expecting anything. I've never read Dracula, never seen any of the Dracula or Nosferatu movies; making me a fairly unbiased watcher; and now i definitely want to check them all out. Horror is a really interesting genre isnt it?
People online seem divided. Is Ellen a victim of the vampire ? Is their relationship abuse? Or is she a sexual woman in a repressive society, who truly wants him ? Well Im not the only one to think this, but can she not be both? The vision of her as either "someone who made a mistake in calling him, and now owns up to it and solves the issue herself" or "his victim who never stood a chance to be well or have healthy relationships, and had to die in the end to be delivered", well it's normal that people are torn between these two ideas. It's way easier and more comfortable to put her in one of the two categories and lash out at those who have the opposite opinion. Either a victim or a willing participant in her own sexuality.
I understand and I can identify with this dichotomy. In this sense the movie really spoke to me; and thats why I'm glad I saw it. Oddly, I can relate with Ellen.
Putting all that aside, I didnt think the movie was perfect either. I wish she didnt have to die. I would've rather she killed him. But at the same time, i admire the portrayal of a ""weak"" victim. The historical context was also interesting. It made me think about the huge potential of horror that comes with being a woman throughout history. I really want to explore this topic more.
There were also some spooky moments i guess. I was more scared about what might be coming than what actually came. What i liked the least is when Friedrich desecrates his dead wife. It seems uneccesary. Though I've seen people defend it as a parallel to the final scene between Orlok and Ellen; but still. It just feels too violent. Though I guess that's where the horror comes from.
And then there's the humour. When we got out of the theater we quickly turned to humour. We laugh at Lily Rose Depp's facial expressions, we laugh at Orlok's strong accent. Is this intended? Are we meant to laugh at the grotesque, or is the discomfort caused by the intertwining of erotic and repulsive something we should sit with instead?
It's definitely a reflex for people, nowadays, not to take things seriously. We wrap everything in layers and layers of irony. I did this too. We got some good laughs out of this movie; i got some thrills. In that sense it was good.
The whole movie was also undeniably gorgeous and the costumes were stunning. I generally liked the acting. Nicholas Hoult is handsome, and Orlok's prostetics were incredible.
a really casual code.. not entirely satisfied with it but the make was cuteIf i had to rate it, id give it a 7.5/10. And i really enjoyed seeing it with my friends. I'm glad I saw it at the cinema as well. I love going to the movies as an experience in itself. I also can't imagine seeing Nosferatu on mobile lmao. The impact would definitely not have been the same watching it in my bedroom, being able to pause it any time.
I was also so happy to finally see Calypso again, we hadn't seen each other since September!
After the movie, we took some pic and chatted about our impressions. Pretty sure I'm the one who liked it the most at the end of the day, but that's fine with me considering I'm the one who's been begging to see this with them since I saw the first trailer.
Thats all i have to say !
Blanca
